No, the Ember App is not required. Your Ember Mug² will work right out of the box and keep your drink at the default temperature of 135°F.

• Ember Mug²: To change the set temperature, you’ll need to pair with the Ember App on a compatible device. Once you’ve set your preferred temperature, the Mug will remember it, and you only need the app again if you want to make further changes.

• Ember Travel Mug²: You can adjust the temperature directly on the touch display, without the app.

Some features, like tea timers, temperature presets, or Health app integration for caffeine tracking, do require the Ember App.
